Item Description
In 1932, thousand of unemployed WWI veterans and their families congregated in camps around Washington, D.C. to lobby Congress for relief via a "Bonus Bill." Eventually President Hoover on July 18 ordered army chief of staff MacArthur to clear the camps. Photos are glossy 8x10" each with Associated Press date and description on reverse. A few corner creases, #2 has publication notation at top and gray semicircle mark at right, #4 has rippling and upper right crease line but overall condition of group is Fine or better. Briefly in date order the photos show: 6-4-32 "Texas Veterans Trek To Washington."/6-24-32 "Bonus Camp In The Shadow Of The Capitol."/7-15-32 "Government Fingerprint Expert Taking Fingerprint Of Member Of Bonus Army."/7-29-32 (plus 8-20-32 ink stamp) "Here Are The Ruins Of Camp Marks, Anacostia, On Washington's Outskirts."/12-13-32 (showing scene from July 1932) "Bonus Marchers Evicted From Washington." Text includes "This Photo Was Taken When They Fought Hand To Hand With Washington Police In An Unsuccessful Attempt To Prevent Themselves From Being Evicted From The City." A dramatic scene with two men wrestling over US flag, man wielding long metal pipe while others hold bricks poised to throw at the police officers. One policeman's hat is seen flying through the air in the middle of the picture while another policeman on the right reaches for a baseball bat that is lying on the ground. A disturbing photo to say the least. Last is 5-19-33 "Bonus Seekers Parade Passed The White House In Sharp Contrast To The Scenes Of A Year Ago, The Bonus Seeking War Veterans Quietly March Passed The White House, May 19, En Route To The Capitol, Where Demands Were Made For Payment Of The Bonus And The Immediate Relief." Interesting to note the change in action that occurred after the Roosevelt administration took office. A very historic photographic record with some parallels to the Occupy Wall Street movement today.
