Item Description
The story behind this group, which includes Nixon autographed glossy photo, is summarized in the caption on a very thin newsprint paper 7x9" which is some form of wire photo. Caption reads in full: "WAP080308 8/3/73 WASHINGTON: Jessica Solomon, 9, Who Received Nationwide Publicity From A News Photo Showing Her Clinging To Pres. Nixon's Arm When The Chief Executive Visited Harrisburg, Pa. Last June To View Tropical Storm Agnes Destruction, Met The President Again 8/2 At The White House. LTR: Rep. George A. Goodling, R-Pa.; Nixon; Jessica; And Rep. Herman T. Schneebeli, R-Pa (UPI) FROM WHITE HOUSE." This is Exc. Next is newspaper clipping of same photo with condensed caption. This has 1" and 2" tear repairs on back with archival tape. Next is actual 7.25x9.25" glossy photo with crop marks on front, reverse names of the people with Nixon and stamp "Official Photograph The White House Washington." NM as used. York/Harrisburg newsman Harry McLaughlin was present at this photo session. Next two items, one signed by Nixon and one unsigned, are 7.25x9.25". Both with "Official Photograph The White House Washington" on reverse. The unsigned one has Harry's notation on reverse. The scene shows Nixon, Harry and Jessica looking at a notebook holding items received by Harry from Nixon's mother Hanna. McLaughlin's text reads "Aug. 2, 1973/In White House Oval Office/Jessica Solomon - Age 8 Of Harrisburg/Victim Of Hurricane Agnes - Who Met Nixon When Toured The Flooded Area. In Background Is Her Mother Mrs. Elijah Solomon With Harry McLaughlin. At Photos, And Letters From Nixon's Mother, Hanna To McLaughlin." NM. The identical photo has Harry's address stamp on back and his caption "Nixon In Oval Office" plus four 1.5" masking tape strips. Front image is totally clean. This was signed at a later date when Harry and Nixon met, perhaps 4/26/77 as per next item perhaps on a Nixon visit to the York County park named in his honor which Harry was intimately involved in creating. On the lamp shade area of the photo Nixon wrote "To Harry McLaughlin With Best Wishes/Yours/Richard Nixon." Faint trace of yellow tone on foreground sofa and quite faint .5x1" area of ink smudge on door in background. See next related item. From the Harry McLaughlin Collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
