Item Description
This early 1900s item is 2-3/8" tall with vertical stickpin soldered to flat silvered brass reverse. Front of the piece is very high relief head of a black man with noticeably curly hair. The openings for the eyes and mouth are cut out and on the interior are small metal parts, with touch of black and white paint still remaining on the eyes, with a small metal tab that serves as a tongue. When the piece is moved left or right the eyes and tongue move along in unison. When the piece is tipped forward or backwards, again in unison, the eyes and tongue either protrude slightly or fall back within the confines of the face. While there is paint missing from the center of each eye ball this is really not obvious without magnification. A fascinating early piece with the eyes and tongue producing a rather incredible range of possible movements and 'expressions.' Only example we've seen.
