Item Description
8x10" glossy photo shows 16 member team in uniforms in studio with players in foreground seated on oriental rug. Photo has a raised border and “Foto Aybar” stamp at lower right. Photo has text at top “San Domingo Baseball Club 1937-38" in fountain pen ink with handwritten ink text at bottom “Ciudad Trujillo”. Josh Gibson is in the back row at the far left, Satchel Paige is in the center next to the club president Dr. Aybar with Paige listed as Assistant Manager, Cool Papa Bell is seated in the front row center and Lazaro Salazar is in the center listed as Manager seated next to the club president. Other identified players are: Williams, Castonia, Tiant, Griffin, Matlock, Bankhead, Garcia, Correa, and Perkins. Three players in photo are unnamed. Upper left corner and bottom edge at right of center have hairline handling creases, reverse side has remnants from scrapbook removal but image area is clean, glossy and Fine. The team was organized by dictator Rafael Trujillo who dedicated the 1937 Dominican Baseball League season to his re-election with two rival teams from Santo Domingo merging together for 1937 only. They raided the Negro Leagues to ensure victory and this team won the championship series with the Aguilas. After the season the league collapsed and the Negro Leaguers returned to the US and Trujillo was ousted. The short-lived team was one of the most notable in Dominican League history. A superb distinct image. A historically important photo on a number of levels. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
