Item Description
8x10.5" high quality matte finish photo is titled "National And American Baseball Stars Japan Tour Kobe, November 22 1931" and has "Hinode Studio Sannomi-ya" stamp at lower left. Some players are shown in uniforms wearing US jackets and baseball caps. Lou Gehrig is standing in the back third row at right wearing a suit with George Kelly behind him. Fourteen players toured Japan matching up against local teams and winning all their games. The team was co-managed by Herb Hunter and sports writer Fred Lieb and the roster included Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, Frank Frisch and Rabbit Maranville. George Kelly played utility. Bottom edge has 1" vertical tear at right side with strip of clear tape on blank reverse. Totally clean and Exc. A superb sharp image taken in front of Oriental Hotel with American and Japanese flags crossed at entrance. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
