Item Description
8x10" high quality matte finish photo c.1910 with image of Corbett in suit has nice 1.5x2" fountain pen signature in clear area on his white shirt “To Miss Helen Wills With Best Wishes Sincerely Jas. J. Corbett”. Lower right corner has Los Angeles photographer name. Photo has a few lt. handling creases just visible in reflected light with very lt. .5" moisture mark on his chin and lt. corner crease at lower right. Fine. Corbett won the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship knocking out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round on September 7, 1892. In 1894 he took part in the second boxing match ever filmed, fighting Peter Courtney in West Orange, New Jersey. He lost his title to Bob Fitzsimmons in 1897. The fight was filmed and ran over 100 minutes, making it the world’s first feature film. He retired and went into acting, appearing in low budget films and in minstrel shows.
