Item Description
Solid wood with cream paint measures 3.25" long, 2.25" tall and 2" thick. Gold text on front reads "J.F. Briggs & Co./The New Clothiers/Cortland, N.Y." Top of egg is slotted to hold die-cut thin brass rooster with slogan "I Crow For Cleveland" and details of head with somewhat brighter gold luster. Brass has minor ripple at base of the tail. Underside of the egg has a hole with text around "Patd. May 6, 1884." Interior wire originally held a string, now replaced by black nylon cord. Pulling cord lowers rooster into egg and a notch on underside keeps rooster concealed until cord is pulled to remove wire from notch so rooster springs up out of egg top revealing about 70% of the rooster, but rest must be pushed upward by hand. Paint shows some craze lines and a few 3/16" chips. Overall Fine. Among the earliest mechanical campaign novelties and a rarity.
