Item Description
This glass sheet (with two air bubbles) is painted on the reverse. Including margins under the frame edge, the glass is 10.5x14.5" and overall frame size is 12x16". It appears the original wood backing is behind the glass and the reverse is covered by an old (but not 1800) sheet of tan paper. The scene is boldly titled "America" on bottom panel with additional tiny text naming famous British maker of Mezzotint Prints and reading: "Publish'd by P. Stampa, No.74, Leather Lane, Holborn." On the column next to Liberty is an intentionally shaded oval panel. The shading makes close viewing necessary to see the text: "To Thee/Memory Of/Geo. Washington/Born 11th Feby. 1732./Died 13th Dec./1799." Added details include urn atop column, small black man to right wearing feather headdress and waistband, tall feather accent on Liberty's head, fifteen stars and an eagle on the flag she holds, large waterfall at far left and pair of black men engaged in spearing fish from the lower river bank. There is actual little color loss but some of the deep red edges of Liberty's cap now have some air spots between the paint and the glass that stand out some in reflected light but they are minimally seen when viewed directly. First the actual loss: 3/8"dia. spot off rim of urn, narrow 1" line off upper most vertical edge of cape, a TOTAL of about 1.5" narrow lines of loss from ALL the other edges of the red cape, a couple .25" small dots and a couple short hairlines off backgrounds at bottom right corner. The areas showing air marks are: about 50% of the edges of Liberty's cape, the line dividing the urn base from its top, the middle feather on the black man's headdress, the area of the red eagle accenting the flag and some very small areas of background at center far left and minor mark on far upper left of the tree. The frame is quite old but we don't know if original. Each corner is joined by a single headless "nail". We found one other example of this item in a Cowan's sale October 2008 with some color variations on Liberty's clothing and without the small spots of paint loss and air that this example has, but detracting little from display appeal. That example sold in excess of $2900. This example opens at a tenth of that.
