Item Description
This and the following six lots are each a large album about 13 to 15" tall by 13 to 15" wide with multiple pages of original photos covering presidential campaigns, conventions, inaugurations and a few special events from 1960 through 1981. These photos (a total of 872 in all seven albums) were taken by Donald L. Mulford, a reporter/photographer and eventually the publisher of the Montclair (NJ) Times. He was with the newspaper from 1940 until his death in 1990. These albums were sold by the family at his wife’s 2009 estate sale. Each album includes a half dozen or more items in addition to the photos. These are tickets, stubs, invitations, Mulford’s newspaper articles, and in the last three albums, many articles include a newspaper printed version of the original photo. In this 1960 album some photos have inked identification names on the margin. Beginning in 1964, the photos have a typical caption below the photo with the same information handwritten on the photo’s reverse. In the albums for 1960 Campaign, 1964 Convention, 1968 Convention, 1969 Nixon Inaugural the photos are glued to black paper. Some are easy to remove, others are firmly mounted. In the 1976 Democratic Convention album, the 1977 Carter Inaugural album and the 1981 Reagan Inaugural (and his birthday) album, the photos are laid on stiff pages with a waxy surface that secures them under a clear plastic sheet. While some photos are strongly adhered, with patience we have been able to successfully lift them off the page with only a minimal, if any, waxy residue on the reverse. The following text applies to the “Presidential Campaign 1960" album with that title on the cover. However, a large piece is off the lower left cover. The cover is split on outer spine edge but cover is firmly attached. Contents are Exc. and could be easily moved to a new album. There are nine photo pages with items on both sides. There are seven pages with newspaper clippings about the conventions and most of these include printed photos that have matching originals. There are total of 138 bw photos mostly 2.5x3.5" but include nine that are 8x10". One 8x10" was removed. Among these 8x10" remaining is a great overhead shot of JFK at center of convention mob, the NJ convention delegation with banner before boarding “American Airlines Electra Flag Ship” to Chicago, Nixon in convertible surrounded by huge New York street crowd and Nixon with Pat meeting little children with Nixon signs. The album begins with Democratic photos. Smaller size photos include: Harriman, Gov. Pat Brown, Henry Fonda (three), JFK (four), Stevenson (two), Eleanor Roosevelt (two), Humphrey, Symington, Rayburn, NY Mayor Wagner, Frank Sinatra (left side of face not shown), LBJ, Adam Clayton Powell with FDR, Jr. . Democratic event ends with full pg. of eight photos of JFK, Ethel Kennedy, and children on airplane and arriving back in Boston. JFK clearly shown surrounded by police in one and head turned to talk to six year old RFK, Jr. in the other. Also a great shot of Bobby facing ABC camera man. GOP photos include: Senator Case, Gov. Hatfield, Pat Nixon, Jim Hagerty, Gov. Quinn (Hawaii), full page of 13 related to Nixon at outdoor event, Nixon next to chief advance man, H.R. Haldeman, full pg. of Ike arriving in Chicago (13 photos), Nelson Rockefeller (four). Total 138 photos.
