Item Description
A rare opportunity to own a piece of stage-worn clothing belonging to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. This colorful and very psychedelic long sleeve stage outfit was worn by Michael in live performances in the 1970s. This polyester shirt is designed by "Boyd Clopton" and complete with stitched tag. No size indicated but it is 30" in length. Features an all-over flower pattern, has wide collar and zippered back. Boyd Clopton was one of the designers of choice for the Jackson 5 and many of their stage outfits were of his design. This shirt was originally purchased from a Leland's auction in 1998. This piece of musical history comes with two letters of authenticity and provenance. The first comes from the merchandising manager for Michael in the 1980s and reads in full "To Whom It May Concern This Is An Authentic Stage Shirt Worn By Michael Jackson While With The Jackson 5 During The 1970s. I Was The Merchandising Manager For Him During The 1980s & Obtained It From A Warehouse Of Michael's Belongings. It Is 100% Authentic.” It is signed and dated February 14, 1998. The second is from the original purchaser (and item's consignor) who owns a prominent New York City record and music store. He writes: "This Letter Is To Confirm The Following: I Purchased This Michael Jackson Shirt From A Sports/Entertainment Auction House In The 1990s. Michael Jackson Was A Visitor And Client Of My Record Store Colony Located In Times Square. Being A Part Of The Historic Brill Building Many Celebrities Shopped At The Colony. Michael Shopped There Often And Would Purchase Records, Singles With Picture Sleeves, And Shirley Temple Memorabilia All Which He Loved To Collect. After I Purchased The Shirt I Tucked It Away At The Shop Waiting For Michael To Return, When He Did In 2004, He Smiled And Recognized It Instantly As One Of His Stage Worn Shirts, I Suggested He Note That On The Shirt And He Obliged, With ‘STAGE WORN’ In A Flower Petal." Michael made no secret of his love of shopping for books, records and clothing. The difficulties in doing so were due to the many enthusiastic fans and autograph seekers. Imagine watching Michael validate the shirt in person! The signature area is 3.5x5" on the back right shoulder. Done in black sharpie, the signature and inscription "Stage Worn Michael Jackson" is bold and distinct. Shirt shows only the slightest wear upon close inspection but remains totally bright and clean. Exc. A real show stopper, this is one of the true highlights from the tens of thousands of items we have offered in our auctions since our beginnings in 1967. Comes with Hake's COA.
