Item Description
13.75x15.75" wood frame has archival mat with deep opening holding 7 7/8x9 7/8" cardboard mount with 5x7" photo in center with 15 players in Indianapolis ABC’s uniforms. Mount has hand inked text at top “Royal Poinciana BB Club Palm Beach-Fla-1916" and hand inked player’s names at bottom. Names as written include Kennard, J. Taylor, Lyons, Hewitt, B. Taylor, Carr, Jefferies, Allen, Dunbar, Johnson, Powell, Forbes, C. I. Taylor, Donaldson, and Pierce. The Royal Poinciana hotel in Palm Beach had winter games during the January to March winter season, and Negro League teams played many winter games there. Ben Taylor and C. I. Taylor were baseball playing brothers. In all but one of his first 16 seasons, Ben Taylor batted over .300. His career spanned from 1913 to 1929 including playing with the ABC’s from 1914 to 1922. He became manager of the ABC’s in 1922. C. I. Taylor was considered one of the two greatest managers of all time and his greatest success came in 1916 when the ABC’s captured the Western championship by defeating Rube Foster’s Chicago American Giants. When the Negro National League was formed in 1920, the ABC’s were charter members and C. I. became the league’s Vice President and served until he passed away in 1922. John Wesley Donaldson played from 1908 to 1949 and had great success as a pitcher with 360 wins and 141 losses with over 4200 strikeouts. He also had a career batting average of .334 in over 1800 at bats. Mount has scattered wear with some dust soil and moisture marks in three corners. All four corners are rounded with tiny bits of missing surface paper. Mount is VG. Photo has trace of lt. dust soil but image area is relatively clean and VF overall. Ready for display. An historical baseball item. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
