Item Description
7-7/8x9-7/8” glossy photo shows 19 players in full uniform with ink signatures. Top row includes Raul Lopez, Tetelo Vargas, Piper Davis, Quincy Trouppe, Victor Pellot, Jose Polaris, Charlie Rivera. Bottom row includes Perucho Cepeda, Fernando Clara, Sam Bankhead, Pedro Alomar and 8 others. Three are not pictured but signed the photograph at the upper right: Bin Torres, Ramon Lasa and Roberto Vargas. Vargas and Cepeda are Latin American Hall of Famers. Cepeda was considered by some historians the greatest ball player from Puerto Rico. He batted over 400 twice in 11 seasons. His son Orlando won the 1967 National League MVP award. Piper Davis was Willy Mays’ manager when Mays played for the Birmingham Black Barons from 1948 to 1950. Victor Pellot is Vic Power, former first basemen for several American League teams. He played in 4 All-Star games and won 7 gold gloves. Quincy Trouppe was the first black catcher in the American League with the Cleveland Indians in 1952. Bottom of photo has 5/8x3-3/8” sticker with handwritten text in ink “The Champions In 1947-48 Cheuas, Puerto Rico.” Numerous lt. handling creases, mostly just visible in reflected light. Four corners have pin holes. Overall VG but would frame nicely and display Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and purchased by him at auction in 2001 for $1,464. Comes with Hake's COA.
