Item Description
3.5x5.5” shows 18 players lined up in uniform. Photo credit at lower right “The Spirit Of The Times Photos.” Caption at bottom reads “St. Louis Stars B.B. Club” and lists players G. Suttles, W. Wells, M. Murray, L. Hensley, E. Patton, J. Russell, B. Russell, H. Williams, W. Dismukes, Capt. R.Davis, J. Reese, W. Bobo. D. Creasy, W. Ross, J. Bell, P. Miller, G. Brown, W. Redus. Top margin edge has 4 thumbtack holes with trace of lt. oxidation, standard top margin edge is missing 1/8” bit of paper, bottom margin of front has ink note “Some Team Of 1926.” Photo has yellowed with age. One thumbtack hole is affecting player’s hat. Slight corner tip wear. Good/VG. The St. Louis Stars competed in the Negro National League from 1922-1931. Team members included: Cool Papa Bell whom manager Jim Taylor converted from a left-handed pitcher into a brilliant center fielder and lead-off batter. The Stars had record seasons in 1927, 1928. In 1930 they won their second Negro National League pennant defeating the Detroit Stars in the playoff and won the pennant in 1931. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
