Item Description
3.5” made by Elwar Limited c. 1965 ©Universal Pictures Inc. The Universal copyright is on the curl. This is the first version featuring a stylized image which clearly represents Bela Lugosi’s portrayal as Count Dracula. This version of button saw extremely limited distribution due to a trademark infringement claim made by Lugosi’s son shortly after the button appeared. The design was ultimately changed, featuring the more common design showing an altered face, 2 visible hands instead of 1, Dracula with white bow tie instead of red medallion and differing “Dracula” typeface. Also, this Lugosi version sports bloody fangs whereas the second version shows fangs without blood. Button has a hairline scratch or streak as produced 1.5” long more or less along the left side of his face from his eyes to his chin at lower right. While this is rather obvious in reflected light, with normal viewing it is essentially invisible. The rest of the button is remarkably wear free and overall the piece displays Mint with normal viewing. Scarce.
