Item Description
The box with a slide-out tray which is empty, is .75” deep by 1.5” wide by 2.25” long. Very nice label on the top reading “Popeye Brand/Safety Matches/Philippine Match Co., Ltd.” Much of the thin rough material on each wooden side panel for striking purposes is gone but the box is o/w very clean and intact. c. 1930s and only example we’ve seen. Second is a very unusually constructed pack of wooden matches with the name “Pullquick” on the .25” thick bottom edge which covers the striking heads of the enclosed wooden matches. Cardboard pack is 1-7/8x2-1/8” with one panel reading “All The News/As Well As All/The Best Features/In The/Cincinnati Times-Star.” Opposite and larger panel with Popeye cartoon reads “Popeye An A-1 Fighting Man/He Loves To Fight With His ‘Fisks’/He Admits He’s Putty In The Hands Of ‘Brunecks’.” Lower right corner reads “The Comic Sensation Daily In The Times-Star.” N. Mint and Rare. Only example we’ve seen. Pair.
