Item Description
Our first example of this piece in Auction #197 drew the attention of an owner who consigned this making it the second we have offered. The piece is 2.5” tall die-cut celluloid with the same image on each side. The item is designed as a flip with a straight pin hanger at the top peak of the clown’s hat. Our example in #197 which realized over $500 had that hat fragment snapped off and the pin missing. On this, the hat and pin are complete although one side of this piece sustained a little moisture damage. When the piece is held so the clown faces right, it displays essentially Mint. When the piece is held with the clown facing left, a little of the red color from his eggshell costume is lighter in tone than it once was and around his legs and feet there is a tiny bit of color loss and a little tiny excess brown color. The damage really is not all that significant, especially since one side displays virtually Mint. In fact, we’ve just discovered this is a variety of our previous item. That one read “Ziz Feltman’s Coney Island.” Feltman’s opened in 1897 as a tiny beachfront stand but expanded into a block-long establishment including Bavarian Bier Garten, Dance Hall, Theater, Carousel, Bath House and very popular roller coaster named the “Ziz.” The item we offer here matches the previous one except it does not have the word “Feltman’s.” Rather than second seen, that makes this the only example we’ve seen. Rare.
