Item Description
First is 15/16” with brass-covered back and vertical stickpin. This reads “Cuba Libre/Maceo/the Martyr.” Button has small and shallow indent at center a little noticeable to the touch. Celluloid covering has toned a bit with age but button is not stained. Second is portrait of “Gen. Antonio Maceo.” This has backpaper with W&H patent dates along with name of New York City jobber W.F. Miller. Backpaper is quite tan but o/w undamaged. Celluloid has tiny tone trace but essentially displays Mint. Both of these are exceedingly rare buttons showing the man who became second in command in 1896 of Cuban Liberation Army. He excelled in guerilla warfare. His position was he would welcome USA aid but did not want USA intervention. He died fighting the Spanish in 1896 prior to the sinking of the battleship Maine which brought the USA into the conflict. Hake book Collectible Pin-Back Buttons photo example Spanish American War Section #104-105. Comes with Hake’s COA.
