Item Description
Cahoon's Seed Sower was patented in the USA in 1861 and claimed to allow the distribution of seeds over 4 to 8 acres in an hour at a normal walking pace.  A hand crank allowed for the scattering of seed in all directions.  This marvelous 1.25" button depicts well dressed farmer in his field operating the device.  Very tiny broken lines spiraling in all directions from the device strapped to his chest indicate flying seeds.  Given the patent date, the button's text which reads "Fifty Years Of Success" would indicate a date of 1911 for this button.  In addition, button text reads "As Ye Sow/So Shall Ye Reap."  Button is without backpaper which we believe is how it was issued as there is also the name of the maker on the curl which was Bastian Bros.  The button is N. Mint and displays Mint.  With button comes an actual 2-7/8x5.75" stiff cardboard "Dennison" tag illustrating on one side how to set the machine to distribute grass seed or oats while the other side has additional directions for sowing wheat or rye, barley, hemp, oats, bluegrass, grass and alfalfa.  Tiny age on one corner of the tag.  The only example we've seen of the tag and only about the third example we've seen of this button featuring one of the most imaginative graphic designs ever.
