Item Description
7/8” button reads “For States Attorney/Cannea/Socialist.” Text is a little off-center to the upper right so the name of the button maker is partially readable on the bottom curl and this text says “Geraghty & Co., Chicago.” No backpaper as issued but with union bug back stamp as well as union bug on the curl. Trivial and typical surface wear under magnification but button displays essentially Mint. William Cannea ran for numerous offices as a Socialist candidate. We don’t know exactly when he ran for States Attorney, but he ran for Chicago mayor in 1922. Earlier, in 1918, with Stedman he served as Eugene Debs’ attorney when Debs was convicted in Cleveland and sentenced to 10 years in prison. Only example we’ve seen.
