Item Description
1.25” picturing Liberty Bell with additional slogan “Liberty To All.” Extreme bottom edge has 3 trivial pale gray dots of little consequence and rest displays essentially Mint. Complete with backpaper by “L.A. Badge & Mfg. Co.” with Broadway address. In 1911 the city of San Diego tried to restrict street meetings by labor organizers in the “Congested District.” In response, the I.W.W., A.F. of L., Socialist Party and some churches, created the California Free Speech League on Jan. 16, 1912. Shortly later on Feb. 8th, 38 men and 3 women were arrested in San Diego for violating the ban against speaking on the streets. This led to mass protests by the CFSL in an attempt to glut the jails while demanding jury trials. Emma Goldman gave her famous “An Enemy Of The People” speech on May 5, 1912. Ben Reitman was tortured by vigilantes. By the fall, the I.W.W. abandoned their soap boxes and the vigilantes were victorious. Only Example we’ve seen.
