Item Description
In 1933 Whitman published the first BLB for Mickey simply titled “Mickey Mouse.” There are 2 cover designs, the first featuring a more primitive-looking Mickey and the second features the revised and classic image. The latter is the cover used for this book. Apparently the next Mickey story “The Mail Pilot” was ready but a new cover was not so to avoid delay, Whitman used covers from the first title by adding the words “The Mail Pilot” on the right side of the front cover. Later, in 1933, the standard cover showing Mickey in his airplane was used on both non-premium and Amoco gas premium versions of “The Mail Pilot.” On the back cover of this book, Whitman printed a black block over “No. 717” (the number used on the first Mickey BLB) and printed “731” next to the block. Book has all-over obvious cover aging and wear including surface paper rubs along all edges. The last 6 pages are loose but here. Book remains 100% complete. Contents also notably aged, some margin/corner chipping appears throughout. A number of pages also have small corner bend. Aside from the 6 noted pages, all others remain intact and binding still tight. Overall a Fair/Good copy. Only 3 copies are known to exist. In 2002, we sold one of the other 2 copies (graded VG) for $5,067. This is without a doubt the Holy Grail of BLB’s.
