Item Description
1-1/16” overall with large 11/16” ferro at center. Likely by the same maker as the Hayes uniface ferro #154. This ferrotype is unlisted in DeWitt but the photo matches Hake #3021. However, this ferro is in gently rounded tin frame with the front beautifully finished in black with brass luster, both colors forming flower petal and leaf designs. There are a couple tiny 1/16” luster dots off the bottom edge but very tiny and blending. The tin reverse has 1-1/8” pin held by a loop. Trivial 1/8” luster dot off the reverse silvered tin. The ferrotype has a single pinpoint shallow indent at Tilden’s mouth that catches reflected light but no break in the emulsion and this is exceedingly minor as is a mere speck of emulsion off the extreme top edge. The ferrotype is truly N. Mint and the frame is Exc. An exceptionally stunning design for the 1876 era. Rare.
