Item Description
15/16” listed as DeWitt/Sullivan 1864-94. Shows bearded photo of Lincoln designated by DeWitt as Lincoln portrait #5. To the left and right, the brass displays a small U.S. shield enclosed by oak and olive wreath and 6 stars. Text above reads “For President” and below “Abraham Lincoln.” The reverse rim features wreath design plus text “For Vice President Andrew Johnson” and very tiny text on bottom edge “Pat. Aug. 12, 1862.” There are 4 small but obvious flaws on the Lincoln ferro. These are a tiny pair of scratches on his forehead, a tiny emulsion dot off his cheek and a narrow vertical gray line along the left side of his neck. Under magnification there are a few additional microscopic emulsion dots but overall the image remains very strong. The Johnson ferro displays Mint with just hairline 1/16” of emulsion off extreme right edge, perhaps as made. The piece is holed as made and has N. Mint brilliant luster. While the Lincoln ferro shows some damage, this is still a very solid example of a piece in the Hake 2004 Revised Prices at $2400. The piece opens at a very conservative amount.
