Attell was the featherweight champion of the world from 1901 to 1912. He was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1955. After he retired from boxing in 1917, he was part of the entourage around gambler Arnold Rothstein. As Rothstein representative, it was Attell who gave $10,000 each to eight Chicago White Sox ballplayers to throw the 1919 World Series. When the scandal broke in 1920, Attell went to Canada for a year to avoid being subpoenaed. He was never brought to trial. Trace of ink smudge on inscription. Attell signature remains strong.
