Item Description
8x11” with 48 pages. Softbound cover with content promoting the fight and just as important, promoting the Nevada gold mining business to prospective investors. Synopsis with boxers’ photos read “Contestants ‘Battling’ Nelson/’Joe’ Gans/Purse-$30,000/Nelson’s Share - $20,000, Win Or Lose – Gans Share - $10,000, Win Or Lose/Weight At Ringside 135 Pounds/Length Of Contest To A Finish…” Below synopsis is listed “Calendar Of Events Preliminary To Contest.” Legendary boxing promoter Tex Rickard is proven to be instrumental in organizing this fight along with the “Goldfield Athletic Club.” One page is devoted to Rickard and titled “The Goldfield Athletic Club And Its Energetic President” with photo of him. Extensive photos/articles chronicle the events leading up to the fight including a photo and text of the articles of agreement. Photo shows both boxers signing agreement. Other photos chronicle both fighters’ arrival in Goldfield. Another interesting photo shows Rickard and others with “The $30,000, All In Gold.” Rickard is pictured behind stacks of gold dollars. Program lists day-long events leading up to the 3 o’clock fight. Events starting at 9 o’clock including double drilling contest, ladies, girls, boys, burro races. Also firemen’s hose race. One o’clock was a 10-round glove contest between Jack Clifford and Boby Lundy with a $1,000 purse. The main attraction was scheduled to start at 3:00 PM. Much of the rest of the program is devoted to promoting the gold mining industry in Goldfield. Advertisers in the back of the program include the Palace Saloon, Exploration Mercantile Co., The Monte Carlo featuring Old Crow Whiskey and Key West cigars and Jake’s Dance Hall. The bout itself lasted an astounding 48 rounds. A film company that was there to record the event ran out of money and film in the 38th round and had to stop shooting. No film record of who actually won the bout was recorded but Nelson delivered a low blow in the 48th round and was disqualified making Gans the winner by default. One ringside eye witness stated “It Looks As Though Nelson, Who Was A Very Badly Beaten Man, Took An Easy Way To Quit.” Overall interesting content for boxing, for Nevada gold rush history and for Tex Rickard who, in 1925, built Madison Square Garden’s III in New York City. Paper cover shows obvious wear. Good. Program is complete and intact but edge wear/moisture marks. Content VG. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
