Item Description
14x19” image area. 20x25” mounted. Photo likely taken upon Johnson’s return to the US on July 20, 1920. Johnson had lived in exile in Europe, South America and Mexico for 7 years after skipping bail when he was convicted by a jury in June, 1913 of transporting women across state lines for immoral purposes. Johnson surrendered to federal agents at the border and was sent to the United States Penitentiary at Levenworth to serve his year-long sentence. Edge and corner wear to mount. “©I.E. Inc.” appears at lower left corner. Lt. surface dust on image. Large photo remains impressive. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with COA.
