Item Description
12.75x15.5” frame contains art that has been matted to 7-5/8x10.75”. Original pen and ink with watercolor art by Hawkshaw creator was done for one Miss Jane Peters, who was ill at the time. Art shows Hawkshaw and his assistant “The Colonel” attending the bedside of Miss Peters, The Colonel having a bouquet of flowers in his hand, lifting his hat and winking. Hawkshaw says “Cast Your Eyes This Way, Miss Peters – I Am Hawkshaw, The Detective – Pay No Attention To the Colonel – He’s Irresponsible!” to which The Colonel replies “Miss Jane Peters, Please Accept This Little Bouquet, And I Hope To See You Well And Strong Again Soon!” Hawkshaw’s archnemesis The Professor is seen bumping into Hawkshaw as he steps on his henchman Pete’s foot, causing Pete to fall into Toby the henchman. Professor says “Say, Who You Shovin’ – You Chicken-Livered Mutt!!” to which Pete replies “Outch, Me Toe Professor!” causing Toby to reply “I S’y – Stop Your Jolly Crowdin’ Pete, Ol’ Posser!” Pete has a small bouquet of flowers in his hand as well. Major has signed in black ink at bottom “Hawkshaw, The Detective Per Gus Mager – Washington’s Birthday, 1917. With Best Wishes For A Speedy Recovery!” Borrowing on his love of the comics his parents received from relatives when he was a child, Mager created Hawkshaw the detective in 1913 due to threatened legal action by Sherlock Holmes creator Arthur Conan Doyle against Mager’s character Sherlocko the Monk, an ape variation on Doyle’s famed detective. (see "Hankshaw, The Detective" platinum Age comic book pair #1455) Mager is also noted as being an assistant to cartoonist Rudolph Dirks of The Katzenjammer Kids. Superb specialty art with a charming personal touch, the nicest we’ve seen by Mager. Makes for an Exc. display. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
