Item Description
8x10-1/8” glossy vintage publicity photo shows famed one-legged tap dancer Peg Leg Bates. Losing his leg in an accident at age 12, Bates taught himself to tap dance using his peg leg and went on to achieve world acclaim, appearing on the “Ed Sullivan Show” 58 times and entertained Queen Elizabeth of England. Great publicity photo shows Bates on stairs with his peg leg raised, his shadow behind him. Signed in blue ink “For Lucy & Beverly. Such A Charming Couple – Always My Very Best To You Both. Peg Leg Bates April 1939.” Lt. handling wear, mostly at margins which could be framed out for an Exc. display. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
