Item Description
9.75x13.75” image area in wood frame. Text in total reads “Zulu Patrol Of Osiris Temple, Wheeling West VA/Attending The Syria Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. 50th Aniversary Ceremonial/Pittsburgh, PA Pitt Stadium, June 25, 1927.”(A.A.O.N.M.S. stands for Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine). Image shows 26 men dressed in blackface with rings in ears and noses dressed in black leotard-type apparel. Each has white paint around their eyes and carries a large pointed spear. One figure on right side holds spear with skull on top. Another is dressed as a woman with what appears to be tapered metal pans as breasts, wearing a white skirt and holding a large exaggerated club. A bizarre concept and so totally politically incorrect by any day’s standards. An enormous crowd (literally hundreds) are seen in the upper bkg. in the stadium. Most wear their lodge outfits. Many carry musical instruments. A strange image. Frame and image both show Lt. wear. VF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with COA.
