12x18” pressbook for original 1941 release of this Monogram picture starring Dick Purcell, Joan Woodbury, Mantan Moreland and Henry Victor. 8-page pressbook has various bw photos from film and of its stars. Publicity articles, poster ad mats and promotional tie-ins abound. Second to last page has write-up featuring “Pepsi-Cola Tie-Up!” and has bw photo of Purcell and Woodbury drinking Pepsi. Other advertising gimicks for this film include “Magic Amulets” which were supposed to protect the wearer from “King Of The Zombies.” These paper tags bore the following “Let Evil Spirits Beware! This Charm Protects Me From The ‘King Of The Zombies’” text and were printed by Economy Novelty and Printing Co. of New York City. A “Flashy Valance And Flag” to hang outside of theatre to promote the film are also pictured, made by Liberman Flag And Valance Co. of New York City. Chevrolet is also mentioned with bw photo of Joan Woodbury behind the wheel of a new Chevrolet station wagon. Another publicity article reads “Here’s A Sock Hit For Colored Fans!” and goes on to say “Exhibitors Who Saw The Hollywood Preview Of ‘King Of The Zombies’ Declare It To Be One Of The Greatest Box Office Attractions Ever Offered To Theatre Owners Whose Houses Are Located In Cities With Good-Sized Negro Populations. Without A Doubt This Film Will Be Enthusiastically Enjoyed By Colored Audiences. The Comedy Antics Of Mantan Moreland, Marguerite Whitten, Leigh Ripper And The Many Other Negro Players Are Terrific And Among The Picture’s Highlights.” Article goes on to read “It Is Well To Note That Mantan Moreland Has Been Steadily Building Up A Fine Following Among Both Races. Right Now He Stands Second Only To Rochester In Fan Mail. Sell Him!” Pressbook has been folded horizontally 3 times with faint vertical crease. Scattered aging and handling wear. VG/Fine.
