Item Description
38” tall straw-stuffed velveteen doll has molded cardboard face with velveteen cover. Doll wears fabric and oilcloth sailor cap with “Popeye” name tag on brim. One glass eye as produced. Holed at mouth, likely for pipe which is not included. Oilcloth belt with metal buckle. Underside of foot is “Popeye” tag with 1929 King Features Syndicate copyright and Dean’s Rag Book Co., Ld. notation. Despite 1929 copyright, this doll was produced in the 1930s by famous English company that also produced Mickey and Minnie Mouse dolls. (See #1721 Mickey & Minnie Dean's pair). Doll has scattered all-over aging with some scattered loss to velveteen exterior along fingers and on face. Lt. oxidation to metal belt buckle. Sailor cap shows aging with a few tiny age spots. Fine overall. The largest and most impressive Popeye figural piece we’ve ever offered. Very rare.
