Item Description
21.5x21-5/8" frame contains matted original art board with opening measuring 19.25x19.5". Begun in the women's section of the Chicago Tribune on Jun. 14, 1914, comic strip centered around tiny 2" tall characters living in life-size real objects which were huge in comparison. Each single panel illustration was accompanied by prose text, art done in pen and ink with watercolor by Donahey. Example we are offering shows 4 Teenie Weenies ironing their clothes with gigantic electric iron. Chinese Teenie Weenie (complete with long, braided lock) shown as he is hurrying into his pants, his along with "Cook" Teenie Weenie are both seen from behind as they are nude and waiting for their clothes to dry. Random articles of tiny clothing are scattered on iron. Nude "Dunce" Teenie Weenie sits astride iron handle. Fez-wearing Teenie Weenie finishes dressing. Large pencil scene in bkg. and smaller 5.25x6" inset panel shows 5" tall Fez-wearing Teenie Weenie holding large pencil on his shoulder. This image was meant to be cut out to form a stand-up doll as image has dotted lines showing where to fold. This was a frequent feature, a new Teenie Weenie featured each week for cut-out purposes. Original art for publication c. 1930s. Scattered dust soiling and handling but colors remain bold and art displays Exc. Very rare with few known surviving examples.
