Item Description
10.25x13" w/40 pages © 1947. Embossed cover w/string binding. Center illustrations designed like stamp. Embossed text reads "Official Stamp Album Of The Stars And Studios." Numerous facsimile signatures appear around margins. Spine reads "First Edition." Gold embossing has become dull w/age. Three barely noticeable scratches appear across cover. 2" lt. crease at upper right but cover remains solid and VF. Inside cover has foreword w/instructions for "Hollywood Star Stamp Collectors." Text also includes the stamps/packets numbering systems. A total of 45 packets were available to complete the series of 474 star stamps. Bottom of inside cover adds notation "Approved By National Poster Stamp Society. Certificate No. 195." Each of the numbered pages has a printed design and text, most w/facsimile signatures of the appropriate star. Each page contains six to 16 stamps. Each page is complete w/stamps being carefully placed into their proper location. Bottom of each stamp reads "© 1947 Hollywood Stamp Stars." Various numbering systems are used for each different series. Everyone and anyone who was involved in the movies/Hollywood/celebrities appears to be represented here. First page includes 15 "American Historical Characters" w/actors that have portrayed such famous Americans as Abraham Lincoln by Raymond Massey, Thomas Edison by Spencer Tracy, Alexander Graham Bell by Don Ameche. Page 2 begins a set titled "Star Land Series" and fills 12 pages of stars including Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Gary Cooper, Joan Crawford, Marlene Dietrich, Henry Fonda, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum, Van Johnson, Alan Ladd, Burt Lancaster, Vincent Price, Ronald Reagan, Cesar Romero, Orson Welles, John Wayne, Robert Young among others. Next is the Star Quiz Series featuring "World Famous Women" w/each pair of stamps showing actress on one stamp, the famous woman that she portrayed on the other. Included is Lucille Ball, Bette Davis, Rosalyn Russell, Greer Garson, Merle Oberon. Next part of the Star Quiz Series includes "Movie Quiz 3/Identify These Screen And Radio Characters." Each 3.5" long stamp is comprised of a head photo of the actor or actress w/illustrated body. Their character names appear on the stamp. The actor's facsimile signature appears printed below the stamp and include Dagwood, Riley, Sherlock Holmes, etc. Another page is devoted to Movie Quiz 4" series w/each stamp having a character's picture inside a large "Q." Facsimile signatures appears on page. Included are Johnny Weissmuller as Tarzan, Joe Kirkwood Jr. as Joe Palooka, The Andrew Sisters, Smiley Burnette, Trigger, Lassie, etc. Next series is "Shootin' Stars Series." Page has western theme w/stamps attached in horseshoe shape. Stars include Gene Autry, William Boyd, Johnny Mack-Brown, Gabby Hayes, Tim Holt, Allen Lane, Tex Ritter, Roy Rogers, etc. Next series is "Spotlight Series" and feature "New Faces In The Hollywood Spotlight/Stars Of Tomorrow." Noteables include Janet Leigh and Audie Murphy. Next series includes "Younger Set" child stars including Bobby Blake and Natalie Wood. The "Junior Set" has long stamps w/two pictures of the star in a yesterday/today design. Includes Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple, Roddy McDowell, Jackie Cooper, and others. "Stage & Screen Series" features Broadway stars that became "Hollywood Screen Stars." Included Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, Kathrine Hepburn, Burgess Meredith. "Poster Series" consists of three pages w/six long stamps on each page. Each stamp features a full length pin-up view of various actresses, many in bathing suits. Includes Betty Grable, Rita Hayworth, Dorothy Lamour, Ginger Rogers, Yvonne De Carlo, Jane Russell. "Symphony Of Stars" Series features "Maestros Of The Movies." Includes Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Xavier Cougat, etc. "Stars Of Note" Series includes Judy Garland, Jane Powell, Alice Faye, etc. "Star Deck Series" consists of four pages featuring star illustrations on face cards as if from a deck of cards. Included are Boris Karloff (illustrated as Frankenstein), Bela Lugosi (as Dracula), Edward G. Robinson, Joe E. Brown, Jimmy Durante, Laurel & Hardy, Phil Silvers, Jack Benny, Harpo, Groucho and Chico Marx, Bob Hope, Eddie Cantor, Abbott & Costello, Harold Lloyd. "International Series" features stars from all over the world and includes Desi Arnaz, Glen Ford, Sonja Henie, James Mason, Peter Lawford, Maureen O'Hara, etc. Last four pages are devoted to the "Academy Award Series." Stamps represent award winners of 1929-1946. All of the big names seem to be represented here including Charlie Chaplin, Mickey Rooney, Shirley Temple, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Olivier, Judy Garland, Edgar Bergen, Clark Gable, Wallace Beery, Bing Crosby, James Cagney, Gary Cooper, Spencer Tracy, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Hattie McDaniel (Gone With The Wind). Inside back cover has a check list of all stamps w/representative pages/numbers. Several tiny inked stars beside many of the names. Not offensive. Page margins are fragile but not brittle. Pages are evenly tanned. Fine. All stamps are well centered w/12 having tiny ink marks done w/pen but barely noticeable considering the large number of stamps presented here. Bright and clean. Stamps are Exc. to NM. A wonderful, complete book capturing all of the stars of the day. First we've seen. Possibly one of the only books to be completed, not to mention to have survived 60 years. A movie collector's dream.
