Item Description
Lot of 39 wooden-mounted 4x6" glass lantern slides. Included are 18 slides of Union personages of merit: Generals Warren, Hooker, Thomas, Sedgwick, Reno, Miles, Stoneman and McClellan. Six slides are maps including three from the 1863 Gettysburg campaign. Ten illustrated battle scenes in rich hand-tinted colors. Eight are circular-mounted slides (late 1870s-1880s). One has a fine crack. Two slides are rectangular and hand-tinted. Also included are 4 rectangular-mounted black and white scenes: Lee with troops, a mounted Union Cavalry soldier, panoramic view of the Gettysburg Battlefield, etc. Lot also includes 8x20x16" high projector, probably dates from the 1860s-70s era. It has a brass lens mounted on the front and a heavy steel metal body. Likely operated under candle power, but possibly later a kerosene lamp. The projector has been re-painted black. Also included is a 9.5x15.5x5" deep paper decorated wooden box in which the slides were stored. A wonderful piece of home-made mid-19th century Americana.
