Item Description
The ‘holy grail’ of presidential cartoon buttons with only two examples in the hobby known to us. This superbly colored and designed button was made by Whitehead & Hoag (complete with backpaper) for TR’s return to NYC from Africa and Europe June 18, 1910. It reads simply “The Goerke Co.” with “Welcome” printed across the ocean waves beneath TR’s ark-like boat. Condition problems are minimal. Only in reflected light, three pin point size very shallow indents are around the left palm tree. Likewise, below his rifle barrel a 1/8” long and a 1/16” pair of shallow indent lines show only in reflected light. On the reverse there is a narrow line of light stain in some areas. However, the only stain visible from the front and just barely visible at all is a thin hairline on the extreme edge above the upper left letters “The G.” On the positive side, about 98% of the front surface is totally clean and the celluloid has almost mirror-like gloss. TR in safari outfit perches on cabin roof with piled baggage and one trunk reads “TR/U.S.A.” He wears his trademark eye glasses and sports a great toothy grin. Surrounding animals are hippo, giraffe, two lions, zebra and rhinoceros. Truly among the best ever button designs and for some unknown reason incredibly rare – on par with the rarest varieties of the fabled Cox/Roosevelt jugates.
