Item Description
The colorful symbolic good luck horseshoe, with inner perimeter of tiny American flags, failed to work its charm for Bryan in the home state of his 1908 opponent William Howard Taft. The button’s designer even included a small Bryan photo, a crown accented by red band representing thorns, and a cross of gold to remind the faithful of Bryan’s famous 1896 convention speech. Tiny text below reads “Copyright 1908 Floyd Atwill Paulding Ohio.” No maker’s name and no backpaper if it had one. Celluloid has three extremely light .75” hairlines just barely showing on close inspection in reflected light. Button displays mint with perfect centering and much gloss. First we’ve offered, although past auction results have exceeded $5,000.00.
