Item Description
This piece is usually seen as a two-sided campaign medal in copper or white metal and listed as DeWitt/Sullivan JB1856-2 or 3. DeWitt lists this rare badge variety as JB1856-4, but does not picture it, and calls it a “copper shell,” although this example is brass, not copper. The thin embossed brass is 1-13/16” (47mm) with a long hinged bar pin on the reverse, although a small wire to hold the pin closed is missing. There is a shallow 1/8” dent left of the buck’s front legs and extreme edge of the brass has hairline 3/16” crack below the upper hind leg, although only visible under magnification. The surface has a lovely muted brass patina. Against a field of 32 stars, the buck is shown leaping over a cannon with smoke cloud at barrel opening. The images and text combine to form the inscription “1856 Buchanan And Breckinridge.” Aside from its imaginative design and rarity, and excepting sulfide brooches, this piece is among the earliest and few pre-1860 campaign items designed to be worn as a badge. Fine.
