Item Description
Unlisted in DeWitt-Sullivan but shown as Hake #3043. 1-3/8" dia. complete with unbroken narrow loop on top edge that would allow the piece to be suspended. One side has large embossed portrait surrounded by stars and text "For President U.S. Grant 1868." Metallic surface is clean with about 15% silver flashing remaining. Opposite side has about 95% bright silver flashing remaining. At center are .5" circular ferrotype portraits of each man with their names above. However, the Grant ferrotype is positioned so that only parts of letters of his name are visible. The name of his running mate "Schuyler Colfax" is completely visible. Both emulsion surfaces are flawless with gloss and with extremely clear details. Portraits are surrounded by embossed eagle with spread wings at top while below is a shield design and the words "For/President/Vice-Pres't." A rare uniface ferrotype with the image side in outstanding condition, NM save for a tiny bit of luster loss mostly off the right edge. The quality of the ferrotypes themselves is the best possible. Rare and more so in this condition.
