Item Description
This item comes with a photocopied page from an unknown 1862 publication showing many Union Army military badges. The center column 7" ad from Drowne & Moore, Manufacturing Jewelers 208 Broadway New York shows at top their design for "National Battle Pins" and text specifies "Plated With Fine Gold." Using identical 'pattern' but differing in bkgs. and dates, pins are listed for McClellan, Grant, Rosecrans, Banks, Meade, Gillmore, Burnside, Hooker, Siegel and Foster. Samples are priced at $1.00. Illustration clearly dated 1862. This item for Butler was made the following year and is dated "186.1.2.3." Extremely clear ferrotype oval image of him 3/8" tall. A tiny circle about 1/16" dia. of emulsion is off his lower jaw, but just barely visible to the naked eye. A few dots and hairlines off outer edge of surface but showing only with magnification. High gloss on the ferro and beautiful NM luster on the frame. Hinged vertical pin on reverse anchored to top bar forming 'T' shape. Surrounding image is circle of minute stars and surrounding these are larger embossed designs clock-wise from top of: scales, Liberty with flag and shield, closed book or possibly a cartridge box, crossed swords, scroll and open book likely to represent Bible. Outer edge of shield has extensive embossed tiny text and dates important in Butler's career. For example, sixth entry "Contraband May 25, 61" refers to his declaration that slaves are "Contraband Of War." Skipping sixth entry, but o/w from top and clockwise text reads: "Constitution April 21, 61; Annapolis April 22, 61; Relay House May 5, 61; Baltimore May 13, 61; Fortr. S. Monroe May 22, 61; Hat. Rasinlet Aug. 26, 61; New Orleans May 1, 62; F.T.S. Monroe Nov. 11, 63." The overall size of the pin is 1.25" tall by 1.25" wide holding an incredible amount of text along with the symbolic images and ferrotype portrait. Superbly executed and unique in our experience.
