Item Description
9x12x3.5" box holds classic early Marx toy c. late 1920s. Box is corrugated cardboard with blue text and has overall aging plus few creases, stains. VG. Comes with instruction sheet which has aged somewhat and has small piece missing from bottom which does not affect text. Set includes 8" long tin litho car with battery operated headlights. Rear wheels have parts which appears as if car at one point had wind-up mechanism, however, spring and key are not present, possibly manufactured this way (this being a non-wind up variety.) The Gas station island has base of 3x9.25" and stoplight assembly. Car has original headlights, which work. Gas station island has pair of pumps marked "Ethyl Gas" and "Motor Gas." Great detailing on the pumps and also on the sales rack between them which has oil cans and glass oil bottles. Two milk glass bulbs marked "Gas" on both sides. These were meant to light with the placement of a battery in back of the display rack, however, modern battery we tried would not fit so we are unable to determine if lights still work. Pumps also have hoses and nozzles. These are still complete and pliable. Other item that complete this set is the free-standing stoplight which has lever to change lights from red to green. This is meant to light also but again we were unable to fit a modern battery inside the base so we cannot determine whether this works or not. Toy has a few scattered paint nicks on all 3 pieces, however all pieces are bright and glossy as produced. VF. These elaborate garage/highway type sets made by Marx are truly a classic and this one was produced in commemoration of the completion of the Lincoln Highway.
