Maurice Sendak Collection

Maurice Sendak (1928-2012) was an American illustrator and writer of children's books, perhaps best known for his immensely popular book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. Sendak credited his decision to become an illustrator to watching Walt Disney's film Fantasia at the age of twelve. Sendak carried this love of Disney with him the rest of his life. Hake’s Auction #212 is certainly full of “once in a lifetime” opportunities spread throughout our range of categories. Included amongst these are selections from the Maurice Sendak Disneyana collection. Hake’s Americana & Collectibles founder Ted Hake met Sendak in 1969 while he was in the process of creating In The Night Kitchen. Over the next forty years, Maurice would participate in Hake’s auctions and several times a year Ted would visit him to present early 1930s Mickey Mouse objects for his consideration. In addition to purchasing Disneyana from Hake, Sendak was also interested in 1930s advertising buttons, some of which served as the inspiration for the details in his book illustrations and he thanked Hake by designating a building “Hake Coffee” within In The Night Kitchen. Part of Sendak’s collection will remain in his home under the care of the Maurice Sendak Foundation, which he established before his death last year.  After Sendak’s death, the Foundation allowed Ted to select pieces that he felt would be greatly appreciated by Hake’s customers. Sendak Collection items in this and upcoming auctions will include Hake’s Certificate of Authenticity to document their provenance.
