Item Description
Complete 14.75x21.25" Sunday "Minneapolis Tribune" newspaper for May 29, 1966 that features the Silver Age debut of the "Batman" comic strip. Although Batman first appeared in a comic strip in 1943-1946 and again in 1953, the version that began in 1966 proved to be the most successful, outlasting any previous or subsequent Batman strip. Not long after the "Batman" TV show's Jan. 12, 1966 debut, plans were put into motion to begin a new newspaper comic strip, the Sunday strip debuting on May 29, 1966 and the daily strip debuting the day after. Offered here is a complete Minneapolis, MN. newspaper, complete w/three sections, including "This Week" insert and full color comic section that has large Carmine Infantino-like illustration of Batman and Robin w/large "Batman Is Here!" text at top, above fold. Strip features story by Whitney Ellsworth and art by Sheldon Moldoff. Batman villain The Penguin makes an appearance, as does Alfred, Batman and Robin, who drive off in Batmobile in last panel. "Batman" strip is featured on second to last page at top. Bottom margin has 2.25" tear and some scattered tears along fold line. None of these issues affect Batman content, which remains clean and VF. Rest of newspaper has scattered wear/aging as to be expected of a nearly 50 year old newspaper. Fine/VF overall. Historic.
