Item Description
Large 35x45.25" ornate wooden frame contains monogram illustration board that has been professionally and attractively quadruple-matted w/subtle Superman colors of red and blue incorporated (though red has slightly faded) to overall size of 20x30.5". This illustration board has very large specialty pen and ink art of Superman in classic pose w/hands on his hips. Image measures 14.25" wide and 24" tall. Art was created c. 1941. When Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman in 1933, they couldn't possibly have foreseen the way audiences would embrace their Last Son of Krypton, securing his place in pop culture history. Though Shuster's minimalistic approach to the ink medium was not as refined as some of the more popular artists who subsequently worked on Superman's comic book adventure, Shuster's Superman has the endearing appeal that could have only come from the hand of his co-creator. Art was inscribed at lower right to Vernon Louis "Lefty" Gomez (1908-1989), the celebrated MLB Hall of Fame pitcher who played in the American League w/the New York Yankees and the Washington Senators 1930-1942. Joe Shuster's inked inscription reads, "Best Personal Regards To Lefty Gomez, From One Superman To Another." In addition to the inscription, this piece was signed by both of the men responsible for creating Superman - Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Artboard has some aging w/slightly darker .75" wide strip of aging along left margin and some scattered dust soiling. Upper right corner has a 2.5" crease. Technically VF, but art remains clean and still displays Exc. Easily the nicest piece of Superman specialty art we've ever seen w/the added historical significance of having been created and signed by his creators.
