Item Description
1.25" with seldom seen back paper by "Newman Mfg. Co./Badges/Novelties/Toys/Cleveland, O." Celluloid has light gray all over age tone but tiny spot was a dirt speck now removed. Johnson headed relief efforts after the Johnstown, PA flood of 1889, was a U.S. Representative from 1891-1895 and served as Mayor of Cleveland 1901-1909. This button is possibly from his 1903 Democratic nomination for Governor of Ohio. He was very influential in the Progressive Movement advancing a program of low streetcar fares, public baths, milk & meat inspections and other reforms.
