Item Description
8x11" w/48 pages. Softbound cover w/content promoting the fight as well as the Nevada gold mining business. Synopsis w/photos of 'Battling' Nelson and 'Joe' Gans lists a purse of $30,000. Nelson's share is listed as $20,000 win or lose whereas Gans' share is listed as $10,000. Legendary boxing promoter Tex Rickard proved instrumental in organizing this historic fight w/the "Goldfield Athletic Club." One page entitled "The Goldfield Athletic Club And Its Energetic President" is devoted to Rickard and shows his photo. Extensive photos/articles chronicle the events leading up to the fight. One photo shows both boxers signing fight agreement. A "Calendar Of Events Preliminary To Contest" lists day-long events leading up to the fight, including double drilling contest, ladies/girls/boys/burro races and a firemen's hose race. A 10-round glove, $1,000 purse contest between Jack Clifford and Boby Lundy also took place. Much of the rest of the program is devoted to promoting the gold mining industry in Goldfield. Advertisers include the Palace Saloon, Exploration Mercantile Co., The Monte Carlo featuring Old Crow Whiskey and Key West cigars and Jake's Dance Hall. The bout itself lasted an astounding 48 rounds. A film company there to record the event ran out of money and film in the 38th round and had to stop shooting. No film record of who actually won the bout was recorded but Nelson delivered a low blow in the 48th round and was disqualified making Gans the winner by default. One ringside eye witness stated "It Looks As Though Nelson, Who Was A Very Badly Beaten Man, Took An Easy Way To Quit." Interesting content for boxing fans and history enthusiasts. Paper cover shows obvious wear. Good. Program interior is complete but shows edge wear/moisture marks. VG. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA. This is the same copy we offered in our Jan., 2010 auction that sold for $1,528. It has since been re-consigned back to us.
