Item Description
As with our previous early band item, this requires a bit of history to appreciate its significance. This item is a wooden medal 2-7/8" dia. by 3/8" thick. Raised lettering on the back reads "National Peace Jubilee Association Boston June 1869." At reverse top is a tiny 1/16" shallow hole but all else about the piece remains essentially Mint. This event was organized by Patrick Gilmore a famous composer and band master of the 19th century. In total more than 11 thousand performers participated including 100 choral groups, 525 musicians with the orchestra, and 486 musicians with the wind band. For the event a "Hymn Of Peace" was written by Dr. Oliver Wendell Holmes. The front of this piece has high relief profile bust with name below "Miss C.L. Kellogg." She was an opera soprano who pioneered in presenting grand opera in English. She debuted in New York in 1861, performed before Generals Grant and Sherman in Chicago shortly after the Civil War and participated in this Peace Jubilee 1869 event. A historic music related item and NM.
