Item Description
Large 25x34" single-sided paper sheet dry-mounted to stiff poster board. Paper is very clean, just a little tanning on left bkg. of Dayton. Paper has three vertical and three horizontal fold creases, but they detract little. Each corner is lifting a bit from the backing. Paper could likely be professionally removed if linen-mounting is desired or it could be re-framed to Exc. appearance. "Brother Jonathan" was the first weekly illustrated publication in the United States and was operated by Benjamin Day 1842-1862. The center column of text on this poster promotes the upcoming "Mammoth Double-Sheet Brother Jonathan For Christmas And New Years 1857." Listed are many engravings to appear plus paragraphs promoting the weekly newspaper and long paragraph about the publisher and his enterprises. The very top title reads "The Presidential Candidates. 1856. Election........Tuesday, 4th November." Below, shown top to bottom w/party names and candidates' full names are three sets of large jugate portraits in three different sets of ornate wreaths - "Democratic" candidates Buchanan and Breckinridge; "Republican" candidates Fremont and Dayton; "Know Nothing" candidates Fillmore and Donelson. Five of the six portraits specify one of four different engraver's names. We do not know how this 1856 poster of the candidates was distributed. Perhaps it was folded within a pre-election day issue of the newspaper or perhaps it was given only to vendors, but either way, we emphasize it is a single-sided poster. VF. Rare.
