Item Description
5.25x8.5" by noted Gettysburg, PA. battlefield photographer Levi Mumper of Mumper & Co. Photo shows the view from Seminary Ridge, w/Little Round Top and Big Round Top visible in the distance. Seminary Ridge was the site of Battle of Gettysburg fighting on July 1, 1863, as well as an engagement the following day. Robert E. Lee established his headquarters on the ridge just north of the Chambersburg Pike, the ridge serving as the Confederate line of battle for July 2-3 attacks against Union Army positions on Cemetery Ridge. On July 3, 500 men in George Pickett's division were killed/wounded on Seminary Ridge by the Federal artillery counterfire prior to Pickett's Charge. This photo was taken c. 1875 during late autumn/winter as the trees are w/o leaves and crops have been harvested. "Mumper & Co." imprint along w/"Gettysburg, PA." text along left margin. Reverse has large central collage of battle monuments/memorials and repeated "Mumper & Co." name as well as "Battlefield Photographers - 29 Baltimore St., Gettysburg, Pa." notation. Inked notation at top reads "#1221 - From Seminary Cupola To Hancock & Sickels Line Round Top In Distance." Corner foxing and lt. moisture staining on reverse at lower right corner. VG.
