A special 8 page printed brochure detailing this item is also available upon request.

By 1921, buttons had been documenting American life for twenty-five years. That year, in Toledo, Ohio, a young boy picked up a discarded button while on an errand to buy a loaf of bread for his mother. Joseph L. Stone went on to document the vast world of buttons for the next half century. Joe and I happily traded buttons beginning in the late 1960s and it was with mixed emotions that I purchased his collection of 50,000 buttons from his estate in 1974. In 1986, I dedicated my book, co-authored with Russ King, to Joe. His collection dominates the book and particularly so the 498 buttons shown on the sixteen pages in color. A few of the 498 buttons shown I did not own, I relinquished a few over the years and I upgraded a few so that today 485 of the 498 shown in color comprise the collection. My preference is for the group to remain intact, so it is being offered as such. All sixteen pages showing the 485 buttons, that now comprise the collection, are on our website – www.hakes.com. The vast majority are in Excellent to Mint condition. Those with some condition issue, an upgraded example or some other pertinent fact are detailed on the website using the original page numbers of the book plus the row number and position of the button in that row. We also illustrate about 45 of the many wonderful rarities in the collection. For some we show past auction results and for others we show the number of examples known to us and an estimate of value. Many buttons are unique examples in the hobby and many, many more fall in the range of only two to five known examples. A first edition of the now out of print book is included with the collection. Unique one of a kind collection. Comes with Hake's COA.
