Item Description
This piece comes from the "Manufacturing Jewelers" firm in Providence, R.I. who made the two examples of the rare premium Superman secret chamber rings in 1941. See previous item. This piece probably dates from the 1930s. The item consists of six die-cut pieces of celluloid held together by a center rivet so that they can be swiveled. When fully opened the piece is 4.25" in dia. Each celluloid piece has a hole at its center representing a ring size and the holes are graduated from "Size One" for "Baby Rings" up to "Size Twelve" with caption "Everything In Rings." Other titles on the segments are "Signet Rings, Misses Rings, Birthday Rings, Stone Rings, Ladies' Rings, Boys' Rings, Cluster Rings, Emblem Rings, Men's Rings, Band Rings," Additional extensive advertising text appears on the celluloid bar spanning the circular segments at each end and these include text such as "Largest Ring Makers In The World" and "Sold Only Through The Jobbing Trade." Similar inscriptions and text appear on the reverse of the item a well. These include captions such as "Gold Filled Bracelets, Gold Filled Rings, Gold Brooches" and others. Scattered bit of light dust soil on some of the celluloid segments but overall the piece remains VF. Only example we've seen. The firm was founded in 1879 with Nathan Barton. Co-founder Englehart Ostby became a victim of the Titanic disaster in 1912.
